The Domaine du Clos des Cazaux is a family-owned estate that has been dedicated to winemaking for five generations. The estate covers 52 hectares, including 24 in the Vacqueyras AOC, 20 in the Gigondas AOC, and 5 in the Côtes du Rhône AOC.
Gabriel Archimbaud, the forefather of the current winemakers, was one of the first to sell bottled Vacqueyras bearing the name of the village and the estate in the early 20th century. The estate is now run by Jean-Michel and Frédéric Vache.
Annual production totals 130,000 bottles made from single-vineyard selections. Half is sold in France through traditional retail channels and at the estate’s tasting room, while the other half is exported.
The grape varieties are primarily Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. However, we make a point of including some of the appellation’s “forgotten” grape varieties in our blends, such as Aubun, Counoise, Cinsault, Muscardin, and Carignan. For our white wines, we primarily use old-vine Clairette, supplemented by Roussanne, White Grenache, and a small amount of Viognier.
The entire harvest is picked by hand and sorted twice to ensure the raw material is of impeccable quality.
The ecosystem: our entire vineyard is bordered by tree-lined slopes or hedgerows to preserve the local flora and fauna. Whenever possible, we use natural grass strips between the vine rows and around the vineyard to prevent erosion and ensure natural soil aeration.
