Avignon with the family: visiting Avignon with children

Fancy exploring Avignon with the children? The city is ideal for a family holiday. Its historic centre, part of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is easy to explore on foot and offers plenty of child-friendly activities. With its iconic monuments, treasure hunts, outdoor activities and cultural experiences, the city offers a variety of ways to spend the day that are accessible and suitable for all ages.

Top 5 family-friendly activities in Avignon

If it’s your first visit to the city, these activities combine heritage, fun experiences and breaks tailored to a family’s pace.

Activities for all ages

With very young children (aged 3–6)

Visiting Avignon with young children means adapting the pace and the activities. The city lends itself particularly well to this thanks to its compact historic centre, which is largely pedestrianised. At this age, opt for simple, accessible experiences. Walks through the narrow streets, across the squares and around the ramparts offer a relaxed introduction to the city.
The city’s gardens offer play areas for little ones, each with its own unique atmosphere.

With pre-teens and teenagers

From the age of 10, children seek greater freedom and variety in their activities. In Avignon, it’s easy to put together a well-balanced day combining culture, leisure and opportunities for them to do things on their own.
The must-see attractions remain a good starting point. To round things off, several museums allow visitors to tailor their exploration to their interests, ranging from classic collections to contemporary art.
The city is also perfect for a leisurely stroll. The pedestrianised streets in the centre offer a lively atmosphere, with shops, bookshops, games and places to relax. Teenagers can also explore the city in a different way, by seeking out the Festival’s window displays or street art.

To add some variety to the day, it’s a good idea to include some more active pursuits. Barthelasse Island offers spaces for cycling, skateboarding or simply relaxing. The Plaine des Sports, accessible by tram, also provides opportunities for activities such as bowling or ice skating. At the end of the day, a trip to the theatre or cinema is a natural way to round off the experience.

Environmental education

Come to Avignon for some fun for young and old alike, and discover the different aspects of protecting our environment!

  • I’m visiting the Requien Museum because to better respect nature, you have to learn about it.

  • I’m off to the Vouland Museum: the museum is committed to a permanent sustainable approach! Be sure to take a stroll through the garden – it’s an LPO nature reserve and, as such, protects all biodiversity. Feel free to take out your snack and enjoy it in the shade of a tree.

  • I’m spending some time at the Tipi urban farm.

  • I’ll take the free river shuttle and set off to explore Barthelasse Island.

  • Whilst strolling around Barthelasse Island, I stop off at the Reboule farm to buy some fruit and cheese, or simply to explore the place and meet the animals!

Avignon has venues offering shows suitable for very young children, sometimes as young as six months: Le Totem, La Marelle des Teinturiers, the Théâtre de l’Observance and many others during our festivals.
