Avignon, a city of nature

Between the Rhône Valley’s ‘king of rivers’, stretching 800 km, and the mouth of the Mediterranean, a love affair has blossomed over the centuries. It gives the City of the Popes its exceptional location, at the crossroads of the Occitanie and Provence regions, and its unique biodiversity. Along its banks, between the ‘giant of Provence’ (Mont Ventoux) and the Camargue, starting from Avignon, treat yourself to some unexpected moments of rejuvenation and set off to discover unspoilt, authentic nature.

A holiday in the ‘slow’ style

Why not use a trip to Avignon as an excuse to start getting back to nature? With a listed city centre that’s almost entirely pedestrianised, local shops that prioritise locally sourced produce, restaurants committed to responsible, high-quality cuisine, an urban farm and numerous eco-friendly initiatives, it’s a piece of cake to enjoy an eco-friendly holiday!

A must-do

Barthelasse Island

The countryside on the outskirts of the historic centre and Europe’s largest river island!

Situated between Avignon and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, between the two branches of the Rhône – the ‘Grand Rhône’ on the Villeneuve side and the ‘Petit Rhône’ on the Avignon side – it offers 700 hectares of peace and greenery, just a few minutes from the historic centre.

🗣 Expert tip
If you want to explore the island, there’s nothing better than a bike – it’s flat and there are plenty of cycle paths!
