Description
At a large luxury hotel in Berlin, an elderly doorman, proud of his uniform, sees his life turned upside down when he is abruptly demoted to the position of restroom attendant because of his age and physical frailty.
Humiliated, he tries to hide his social downfall from his neighbors by continuing to wear his uniform in secret.
*The Last of Men* marks a major breakthrough in cinema thanks to Karl Freund’s innovative “unleashed camera” technique, which gave the image unprecedented mobility. Murnau uses these movements to illustrate the downfall of the old doorman, played with intensity by Emil Jannings. With no intertitles and a forced happy ending, the film was a success and propelled Jannings and Murnau to Hollywood.
Film concert presented as part of the 15th edition of the Rencontres du Sud.
