Major waterworks began in 1821 with the creation of the fountain opposite the Saint Joseph chapel (only the pediment is original).
This was followed in 1838 by the construction of the Pousqueyras communal well, which had just one bucket. In 1855, construction began on the current washhouse. A water pipe supplied water from the Pousqueyras well.
In 1861, a second spring was discovered near the Vaujus spring. It provided water for the Fontaine de l'Ange. But it wasn't until 1873 that the water distribution system to the village's 11 fountains was strengthened by inter¬posing a 2.50 m stone column between the base and pedestal of the statue. This ingenious distribution device also enabled the water flow to be forced in the event of fire. The work was completed in 1874. Rochefort was no longer in need.
The fountain was demolished by decision of the town council in 1964, when the town's water supply was brought into the village. Its reconstruction is the work of the Aigo y font association, chaired by Claude Gizard.
