Barthelasse, Jardin des Doms, Jardin de Ceccano... Picnic spots in Avignon

4 spots for al fresco dining

Make the most of the fine weather to stroll around town and enjoy the green spaces – have a picnic by the banks of the Rhône or in a museum garden, or relax on a terrace with friends or family after seeing a show or an exhibition. Here are our suggestions for places to get some fresh air!

Barthelasse Island

Europe's largest river island

At the foot of the Rocher des Doms, on the Rhône side, the Île de la Barthelasse, the city’s green lung, offers an ideal setting for relaxing and picnicking in the shade of century-old trees (picnic tables available)!

The highlights

The unobstructed view of the emblematic monuments of the city of the Popes.

Tips from the locals

Take the “bac à traille”, the free river shuttle that crosses the river to Barthelasse island!

The Doms garden

A breathtaking view

This English-style garden, which overlooks the Palais des Papes, offers a panoramic view. A true haven of tranquillity with its lake where ducks and swans paddle, it is an unmissable spot for a stroll and a moment of relaxation.

The highlights

Step inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame des Doms, which adjoins the garden: built in the 12th century, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tips from the locals

After several months of renovation work, the Rocher des Doms has reopened its doors and regained its former splendour. The playground has been modernised and now features a giant drac, a mythological creature that is half-fish, half-dragon, much loved by children. A second phase of works will then take place from September 2026 to June 2027, with partial closure.

Square Perdiguier

Eating on the go

A collection of Mediterranean plants, statues and the remains of a Gothic cloister. Tall trees provide cool shade for visitors.

The highlights

A seasonal café-restaurant allows you to soak up the sun on the terrace.

Tips from the locals

After your picnic, let your children enjoy the playground at the far end of the park.

Ceccano garden

A meeting place

In the shade of towering, centuries-old plane trees, at the foot of the media library adorned with frescoes and period ceilings (14th century), enjoy lunch in the shade on one of the many benches provided.

The highlights

A peaceful spot where olive trees and cypresses lend it a distinctly Mediterranean feel.

Tips from the locals

It is the perfect place for a break in nature, combining fresh air and historical heritage.
