Saint-Bénezet Bridge

The Pont Saint Bénezet, built in the 12th century and a major witness to the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to the famous children’s song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. According to legend, the bridge was built in the 12th century by a young shepherd from Vivarais, Bénezet, on divine orders.

Today, everyone knows the song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”: many believe it to be ancient, yet it only dates from the middle of the 20th century. Originally composed by Adolphe Adam, it was first performed at the Opéra Comique in Paris on February 2, 1853, on the occasion of a play entitled “le sourd, ou l’auberge pleine” set in Avignon. Three years later, the operetta “Sur le pont d’Avignon” in which the nursery rhyme was repeated, was a triumph.
