Description
Dedicated to the preservation and discovery of 3,000 years of history, the Vaucluse heritage center built by the Département opens its doors to the general public.
It's hard to miss this large, handsome building with its strong architectural signature, combining concrete, wood and terracotta. Memento looks like a gigantic treasure chest. But you'll have the key. While its primary vocation is conservation, it has also been designed to be accessible to the general public.
This is demonstrated right from the reception hall, where digital devices invite you to take a virtual plunge into the long history of the Vaucluse, before discovering the inaugural exhibition, entitled Mon trésor, in the form of a journey through time, from prehistory to the present day. Just a few steps away, you'll find a 150-seat auditorium designed to host conferences and symposia, as well as the vast, fully-connected public reading room, where researchers and amateur genealogists can consult the collections in ideal conditions.
The rest of the building, with a surface area of over 11,000 m2, houses not only the 28 linear kilometers of archives that have just been moved from the Palais des papes, but also the archaeological collections resulting from four decades of excavations, as well as the reserves of the departmental museums and the archives of Greater Avignon.
