A romantic stroll through the city centerAs well as the famous Palais des Papes and Pont d’Avignon, for which Avignon is famous the world over, it’s a delight to lose yourself hand-in-hand in the medieval streets of the inner city. Rue des Teinturiers is one of Avignon’s most picturesque and poetic spots. You’ll love strolling along the cobblestones to discover the paddlewheels so typical of the city’s industrial past, and strolling along the Sorgue canal in the shade of majestic plane trees. Not far from there, the little garden of Sainte-Claire on rue Pétramale, sheltered from prying eyes, holds the memory of the meeting of Laure de Noves and the poet Petrarch… a romantic stopover in the heart of the old town. Good to know: every year in February, Avignon Tourisme offers a romantic guided stroll through the city, following in the footsteps of the famous loves of which Avignon was the scene: Avignon in love.
