How much do you really know about the Palais des Papes in Avignon? Did you know, for example, that it is the largest Gothic building from the Middle Ages? That it was built in just 20 years, between 1335 and 1352? That it was once a military barracks, a theatre and a cultural venue hosting prestigious exhibitions?
From state rooms and cloisters to the Pope’s private apartments, adorned with priceless frescoes, the Palais des Papes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – can be explored through a tour that has been completely revamped.
New: on 1 May 2026, a new chapter begins for the monument, with the introduction of new discovery trails and the opening of rooms never before shown to the public!
This tour, which will eventually be organised around three themes, will be accompanied by a range of educational resources: interactive models, documentary films, explanatory labels, new signage… An enhanced visitor experience, offering a comprehensive understanding of both the everyday and grand history of the Palais des Papes!
Available from the moment this new chapter begins, the ‘Les Clefs du Palais’ web app will allow users to access all content in six languages from any smartphone.
