Parc Chico Mendes

Park and garden, Park in Avignon
  • The biggest public park in Avignon, with six hectares of parkland, located outside the city walls, in the Pont des Deux Eaux quarter.

  • There's a fitness trail, a jogging trail, children's playground, lots of open spaces, lawns and trees, all of which make this park a real green lung for many local inhabitants.

In 2020, with the city's participative budget known as "La Ruche", a ziplining course was built to the delight of the children. There's also a platform in the trees, built in 2018, where children and parents can stretch out and relax, read or dream away, a veritable haven of peace....

The park is often the scene for birthday parties, get-togethers among friends, and tables and lounge chairs are placed at your disposal.

Teenagers often prefer to hang out at the bowl - a skateboard area where they can skateboard to their hearts" content.

You can fish along the "canal de l'Hôpital", which flows through the park.

People love the bocce-ball playing area, just by the beautiful lane of centuries-old plane trees.

In a word, it's ideal for the entire family!

You can get to Chico Mendès park from the centre city, by taking the beautiful Chemin des Canaux on foot or by bike! A secure way to get there!

The Canal Path is a greenway that connects the ramparts to Montfavet, on a dedicated path that goes along the banks of the Canal de Vaucluse. https://avignon-tourisme.com/activites/le-chemin-des-canaux/

Why was this park named Parc Chico Mendès?
Francisco Alves Mendes Filho, known as Chico Mendes, was the militant union leader in Brazil, well-known among the people whose rights he defended; he stood up for the rights of the workers assigned to collect the latex from the rubber tree plantations in the Amazon.
Chico Mendes became, and has remained, one of the symbols of the defense of the Amazon and generally speaking the environment and sustainable development. Many places and facilities have been christened with his name in France.

Let's not overlook the Dog Park (Cani'Parc), space set aside for dogs to have fun and run freely under the supervision of their masters.
