      Since the arrival of the popes in Avignon in the Middle Ages, vine-growing has developed rapidly in the Rhône Valley. Today’s wines have come a long way, and have now won a place of honour among the great French AOCs.
      In 1996, Avignon became the capital of the Côtes du Rhône.
