Two sportswomen race on the BarthelasseL’île de la Barthelasse has a population of around 1,000 and was protected from urbanization because it flooded. It remains largely agricultural. Numerous areas are devoted to leisure and relaxation, with a skate park, a soccer pitch, a swimming pool, a day-care center and a youth hostel.
The towpath, very quiet and pleasant, offers a breathtaking and exceptional view of the Pont d’Avignon, the Rocher des Doms and the Palais des Papes, and is ideal for a jog, a stroll or even a reverie in the grass.

Until the invention of steamships, heavy convoys of goods were hauled up the Rhône by oxen, horses or men.
Take advantage of the lawn to picnic in the shade of the poplars, admiring the magnificent panoramic view of the Pont d’Avignon, the Palais des Papes and the Rocher des Doms on the other side of the Rhône.
Want a little more comfort? Picnic tables can be found a little further along chemin de la Traille, as well as on the greenway section of chemin de la Barthelasse, just before the intersection with chemin de la Traille.

From this new space on the banks of the Rhône, opposite the Pont Saint Bénezet, set off to discover Barthelasse and Piot islands to fill up on nature experiences!
This new venue, open to all, also hosts a tourist information point: find all the info you need on sport and leisure activities, cultural events, bike rides, walks, guided tours or even local produce tasting spots, to be discovered in the heart of Europe’s largest river island.
Open in June every day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
