The Chapel of Saint Joseph was built in 1729 under the impetus of a leading citizen from Rochefort, Mr. Pierre Palejay.
The keystone shows a small shield engraved with the letters P.P placed on a small cross and surrounded by four numbers which form the date 1734, the date the chapel was consecrated.
This was the centre of life for the citizens of Rochefort. It had been the Town House up until 1825. It was then transformed and housed the town hall on the upper floor, the boys' school and teachers' lodgings on the ground floor. Today, it is home to the Maison des Arts, an exhibition space.
