Through works painted in the last sixty years by the great names in contemporary art – Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, Niele Toroni, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Miquel Barceló, Robert Combas, Enzo Cucchi, Julian Schnabel, Jean Charles Blais among others – this exhibition witnesses the major upheavals in the recent history of painting. Declared dead in the 1960's when conceptual art and minimal art occupied centre stage, painting dramatically returned to the fore in the 1980's, and has once again become an essential medium.
Though Yvon Lambert was one of the leading champions of new avant-garde fields in the 1960s (conceptual art, minimal art, land art) then photography, video and installations, it is interesting to note that painting has always been part of his collection, a common thread connecting some of the most significant works in the history of contemporary art.
With support from the Centre national des arts plastiques.
