  • Joe Hamman: the filmmaker, artist and friend of Native Americans. This exhibition shares insight into a person of extraordinary talent.

  • Filmmaker: Joë Hamman was the first to film Westerns in France, and to introduce the Western film genre in France, in Europe and even in the United States. Hammam was also an actor, a producer, and a horse-back stuntman.
    Most of his films were shot in Camargue, where he worked with his friend Folco de Baroncelli, who he met in 1905 during the French tour of Buffalo Bill.

    Native American specialist: Joë Hamman was friends with many of the Native Americans in the Buffalo Bill show, in particular the Sioux chief Spotted Weasel, who gave him his superb ceremonial costume.
    During this exhbition, a large photo by Joë Hamman of Folco de Baroncelli and Jeanne de Flandreysy in Native American dress will be displayed, as will many costumes and objects.

    Artist: Following studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Joë Hamman became a noted water-colourist and illustrator.
    He produced many oil paintings, sketches and water-colours. His water-colours of Camargue that he painted during his stays there, now in the collections of the Palais du Roure, will also be on display.
    He also illustrated many books and works for youth. He designed advertising, and wrote three books: 'Sur la piste des Bisons' ( 1949), 'Sur les pistes du Far West' (1961) and 'Du Far West à Montmartre' (1962).
