Camille and Paul Claudel, masterpiece of intimacy
Cultural, Exhibition, Sculpture
in Avignon
-
Camille Claudel (1864-1943) started sculpting and making her first works at the age of twelve. During her youthful years, she also focused on portraits, in particular busts, and turned to her family circle for her models.
-
Her younger brother Paul Claudel (1868-1955) was her favorite model.
In 1897, Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905) made a gift to the Museum Calvet, now called the Calvet Foundation, of the bust entitled 'Young Roman', a bronze sculpture made by Camille Claudel.
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the death of Camille Claudel, the Musée Calvet pays tribute to the artist, and displays this work long held in its collections.
