Avignon in July, a festival!
From the Festival d’Avignon founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, to the exuberant OFF festival, and the lively events at Villeneuve en Scène, there is not a single area that goes without vibrant performing arts and enthusiastic applause. In July, all the area is a stage..
Avignon
The beating heart of theatrical creation
Like a lovely lass preparing to see her love, Avignon in July gets ready to welcome actors and actresses, musicians, acrobats, circus artists, dancers… and their audiences! Since 1947 and the very first ‘theatre week’ dreamed up by Jean Vilar, Avignon has become the symbol of artistic creation. The Festival takes over the Honour Courtyard at the Palace of the Popes, cloisters, high schools and elsewhere. The Festival d’Avignon, also known as the ‘IN’, sets a fast-beating pace for audiences of the performing arts and theatre discoveries. Shows can be demanding, discussion and exchange on what you’ve seen or want to see fills the air during three weeks, bringing together local Avignon inhabitants and festival-goers from the world over.
